Can anyone beat Flatto in the Fall?

Now that we're into the second week of April with no declared candidate for the Republicans in town, the question is, can anyone beat Ken Flatto in the fall election for what is now a 4-year term?

hi, as Republicans, we think Flatto is doing quite well. Maybe the party should endorse him too!

Well the reality is that if no one's running, and no one's there to be the out-in-front voice for the GOP on the various town administration issues, then nobody's going to lay a glove on Flatto. Seriously, if the budgeting season sails by with no candidate, what are the Republicans going to run on? "Flatto botched the fireworks display"?

The GOP has enough of a generic partisan advantage that Flatto will never be able to assume a cakewalk, but despite anon 11:32's moaning, newspapers cover a candidate's ideas and vision as newsworthy events happen. The more events that pass without any public GOP leader, the less chance any GOP candidate will have of getting their perspective out there. The fact that the paper runs stories on town government with Ken giving a big ol' thumbs up to the camera is not the newspaper's fault, but your own.

If there's no candidate by June 1st, I'd say the town Republican Party will just be running triage in hopes of holding the Board of Finance this year.

I know November 06 was no fun for you guys, but if you're still reeling from your losses six months later, you're in the kind of real "governing philosophy" trouble that disqualifies you from leading at all in the eyes of the public. A governing party has to be decisive and put their best foot forward, which Flatto and the Dems are doing.

Hi, no I doubt anyone can beat Mr. Flatto since he has done well. But I am really angered that you would post outrageous anonymous comments disparaging town leaders or firefighters and urge you to remove such inappropriate postings from your stated policy of creating a "nice courteous" site for readers like us.

Julie, let them make their comments anonymously. I think it's important to always bring your A-game to politics, whether it's a blog post or a Board of Selectmen campaign. If a sentence fragment is the best they can manage (like anon 7:17), it reflects on no-one but themselves.

Here's a thought. How about a poll comparing Flatto to Rell. Both are incredibly popular. The two of them are similar in terms of integrity, hard work, competence and niceness. Ken Flatto is one of the most positive, gentelmanly politicians I have ever met. maybe the Minuteman should have asked "do you favor Flatto running next for Governor in a few years after he finishes his job helping Fairfield!!!

hahahahaha, oh wow i can not stop laughing from william's comments. to compare Flatto to Rell is the most outrageous thing i have ever read. Flatto has no integrity and never has he tells anyone anything they want to hear. the republicans can do better they just need to get out of there own way.

As an active member of the Fairfield Republican Party, I can assure you that an announcement will be made shortly.

As for the question, any candidate can be defeated. As long as the candidate is strong, works hard and connects with the voters.

For anyone interested in getting involved in the local GOP or thinking about running for any office, we are hosting a GOP outreach event at Vino in the Brickwalk on Wednesday, May 2nd, from 6-9pm.

Anyone who thinks they can not be beat, will lose.

anyone with the core competency to do the job can beat Flatto if they run a good campaign but it would be helpful if you/the FM didn't constantly paint him as some kind of wonder boy. nothing gets done in Fairfield without the cooperation of numerous volunteer boards.

And I noted last week or so that you featured a story on Fire Captain Gomola where he showed you his pet project on a town computer. That is an innaproprite use of town resources. Check out the state's policy on the use of governemtn computers - e-mail for emergency persoanl use and to contact relatives deployed overseas in the military only. It aim't volunteer work if it's down with town resources and on town time. Maybe it's time for fairfield to take a hard look at it's policies.
